7 Key Takeaways From Django Developer Survey 2024
Here are seven key takeaways from the Django developer survey 2024.
74% of Developers Picks Django
Django has long been a preferred choice for developers but its popularity has declined in the last few years. The popularity of Django decreased from 83% in 2022 to 74% in 2023.This stat also shows that developers are also exploring alternative frameworks.Developers have to rely on different frameworks in order to fulfill rapidly evolving project demands and developing specific features to fulfill the exact business use case.
61% Are Using It For REST API As Django REST Framework
The Django developer survey found that 61% of developers are using Django for REST API development and some are using it as a Django REST framework. This clearly shows that most developers are developing application programming interfaces using the Django REST framework.
39% of Django Developers Implemented Infrastructure as a Code
One of the biggest surprises from the Django developer survey 2024 was that 39% of Django developers have already implemented infrastructure as code. This clearly indicates that more and more developers are inclined to manage infrastructure as code instead of dealing with hardware such as cheap dedicated servers as hardware. Moreover, this is also a sign that Django developers are focusing their attention towards automation.
What makes infrastructure as a code stand out is that it offers a repeatable, scalable and reliable setup for large scale projects just like VPS server. This makes it an ideal choice for such projects. When it comes to infrastructure as a code provisioning, 20% of Django developers opted for Terraform, making it a market leader in that category.
33% of Developers are Using Flask and FastAPI
One-third (33%) of all developers using Django as their preferred web framework are using Flask and FastAPI.This is a sign that these developers possess diverse back end skills. When you look at the numbers separately for Flask and FastAPI, you will notice an interesting trend.
FastAPI manages to hold its popularity among developers while Flask popularity declined when compared to last year. 25% of developers prefer FastAPI. Flask usage experienced a minor decline from 29% in 2022 to 26% in 2023.With only 11% of developers using other frameworks, this clearly shows developer preference towards Flask and FastAPI.
Django is Mostly Used In Full Stack Development and API Development
When developers were asked about What do you use Django for? Most of them said that they are using it for API development and full stack development. 74% of Dnago developers are using it for full stack development while 60% of Django developers are using it for API development. This clearly indicators the growing demand for API development using Django.
Most Developers Are Using HTMX, Alpine,js and Tailwind For Front End Development
One trend that was evident from the Django developer survey 2024 was that Django developers prefer newer, easier to use frameworks over older more established ones. This is evident from the growing popularity of HTMX, Alpine.js and Tailwind CSS.
HTMX usage increased from 16% in 2022 to 23% in 2023. Similarly, Alpine.js popularity went up from 6% in 2022 to 10% in 2023.The popularity of Tailwind CSS has almost doubled in the last couple of years. On the flipside, when you look at the popularity numbers of older and more established frameworks such as Vue, JQuery and React, you will notice a drop in their adoption rate over the last few years.
Vue adoption rate declined the most as it fell from 25% in 2022 to 19% in 2023. The drop in popularity of JQuery and React was minor. Jquery adoption rate decreased from 32% in 2022, to 31% in 2023 and React share dipped from 36% in 2022 to 35% in 2023.
GitHub Actions Is Speeding Up Continuous Integration Adoption
Django developers are actively relying on continuous integration tools and their popularity speaks volumes about it. GitHub Actions is a clear winner with its adoption rate growing from 35% in 2021 to 45% in 2023.GitHub Actions is playing a pivotal role in boosting the productivity and efficiency of Django developers.
