2. Causation
- Definition: Causation indicates that one variable directly influences another. In other words, a change in one variable will produce a change in another variable.
- Establishing causation requires experimental evidence or strong theoretical backing, often involving controlled experiments or longitudinal studies.
Examples of Causation:
- Smoking and Lung Cancer: Research has shown that smoking causes an increased risk of lung cancer. There is a direct causal relationship because chemical compounds in cigarettes can lead to cancerous cell growth.
- Studying and Exam Scores: More hours of studying typically lead to better exam scores. Here, the action of studying directly influences the outcome (higher scores).
