Setting up IT Infrastructure for a Startup

It’s been over three months since we started operating as an organization. Off the many things that you need to do while starting your own company, an important area is to identify the IT requirements of your company. While there are tonnes of information available on what are the “go-to” products and services, it is never really an easy task setting it up on your own.

Technology has a role in many aspects of your business that can get daunting. From the platform you build your website (and host it) to productivity applications, the devices to work on, and connectivity, the list is quite long.

We know there is a concept of CIOs on demand, but then those are best fit for either established organizations or startups that are well funded.

The purpose of technology is to make things happen for an individual or an organization. But it becomes great when it is simple to understand and operate. Smartphones are such a success simply because of their intuitiveness.

We are sure we echo the sentiments of many small organizations who wish enterprise technology was as simple as using a smartphone.

And issues don’t end with deciding what to buy. What about troubleshooting an installed application or infrastructure-related problem? Most of the challenges are trivial but complex enough not to get solved.

As companies grow, they build capabilities along the way. Managing technology is somewhat akin to this philosophy. While the ideal scenario is to hire or outsource to manage your IT function (inorganic approach), the prudent way is to build those capabilities internally. The second approach has its drawbacks, but then again, most small organizations don’t have the luxury of spending on additional people. Also, there is a difference between knowing and doing. Anyone who has got his hands dirty (and perhaps made mistakes in the process) will always have the correct intuition of things, even when a specialist is on-board. Because, after all, no one cares about your company as much as you do! know more…..
