2 tablespoons ghee

1 teaspoon cumin seeds

1 teaspoon mustard seeds

2-3 dried red chilies

Instructions:

 

  • Wash the toor dal by running water. Drain the water and set aside.
  • In a pressure cooker, add the washed lentils, water, turmeric powder, and salt. Cook until the toor dal becomes soft.
  • While the dal is being cooked, heat ghee in a separate pan at medium heat. Add cumin seed to sputter.
  • Then add onion pieces and sauté till they become golden brown.
  • Add ginger-garlic paste and green chilies. Sauté it for a few seconds till the raw smell is gone .
  • Add tomato pieces and cook them till they become pulpy.
  • Stir in Ramdev Hing powder, red chilli powder, coriander powder and garam masala. Mix well and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
  • Once the lentils are cooked, mash them slightly with the back of a ladle or spoon.
  • Add the prepared onion-tomato mixture to the cooked lentils. Mix well and let it simmer for 5-10 minutes, allowing the flavours to meld together.

 

Tadka (Tempering):

 

  • Heat ghee in a separate pan at medium heat.
  • Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Let them crackle.
  • Add dried red chilies and a pinch of Ramdev Strong Hing, and stir.
  • Pour this tadka over the prepared toor dal and mix well.
  • Garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves.
  • This can be served hot, in combination with roti, naan or rice.
