Rooftop solar systems have the highest potential to contribute to India’s ambitious solar capacity target of 500 GW within 2030. The rooftop solar has to contribute above 100 GW to reach this target. The capacity addition of India is expected to grow at a 77% YoY rate. Now India is the 4th largest renewable energy market across the globe.
This massive growth is the result of the new solar subsidies and financial assistance announced by the central and some state governments in our country. From this article, you can understand how India is progressing towards its rooftop solar panel installation.
Current Status of Solar Installations

According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), the total installed capacity of solar power is 89.43 GW. Here is a breakdown of this capacity:
- Ground Mounted Solar Plant: 69.19 GW
- Grid Connected Solar Rooftop: 13.89 GW
- Hybrid Projects (Solar Component): 2.59 GW
- Off-Grid Solar: 3.76 GW
- Total Installed Capacity: 89.43 GW

In the first half of 2024, India’s rooftop solar installations exceed 1 GW. This is a 26% YoY growth as compared to the first half of 2023 which was just 873 MW (as a report published by Mercom India).
All of these are possible with the help of the rooftop solar subsidy scheme launched by the prime minister of India in February 2024. Let’s see the details about the solar subsidy in India.

What are the Government Initiatives and Policies on Rooftop Solar?
The Indian government announced the updated solar subsidy scheme this year. You can get a maximum of Rs. 78,000 as a subsidy. With subsidy, the government is targeting to increase public demand in terms of solar system installation across the country.
Based on a PIB report, 1.28 crore new users registered on the Surya Ghar portal and 14.84 lakh applications were submitted. Here is a subsidy detail under the latest rooftop solar scheme:
- 1 kW = Rs. 30,000
- 2 kW = Rs. 60,000
- 3 kW or above = Rs. 78,000
However, there may be some state subsidy schemes run by the state governments. If you look for solar subsidy in Uttar Pradesh, you will know that the state offers a Rs. 15,000/kW subsidy (capped at Rs. 30,000).
To get these subsidies, you must complete the installation process through an empanelled vendor.
Future Targets of Solar Installations in India

By 2030, solar energy can fulfil 30% of India’s electricity requirement. It will help to generate millions of jobs and save billions of dollars in fossil fuel imports. Solar power represents India’s dedication to its Paris Agreement obligations.
By 2070, the government is planning to achieve the net zero carbon emission target with different renewable energy sources. To fulfil this target, the government targeted new 1 crore solar system installations through the solar subsidy scheme.
The total installed capacity of solar has increased 30X in the last 9 years. It currently stands at 89.4 GW as of Aug 2024. The estimated potential is 748 GW rooftop solar capacity as per the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE).
The solar system is one of India’s most affordable renewable energy sources, and the solar subsidy scheme is making it more affordable for consumers. The interesting fact is– that if all the solar systems are installed as per the targets, they will generate 1000 BUs (billion units/terawatt hour) of electricity and reduce CO2 emissions by 720 million tonnes from the environment.
If you are looking for a rooftop solar system installation and want to avail of central financial assistance under the solar subsidy scheme, you can contact Das Energie. They will help you to find the correct solar system installer based on your requirements. For instance, you are looking for a solar company in Uttar Pradesh and will get connected with the best installation partner in the state.
