Using the Screenshot Toolbar

MacOS Mojave (10.14) and later versions include a screenshot toolbar:

  1. Capture Entire Screen: Click the thumbnail that appears and then choose where to save it.
  2. Capture Selected Portion: Drag to select the area of the screen to capture.

Taking Screenshots with Preview App

  1. Open Preview: Go to File > Take Screenshot.
  2. Choose Screenshot Type: Select from from selection or from window or from entire screen or the specific part you need to save from the screen.

Different Types of Screenshots:

  • Full Screen: Press Command+Shift+3. This captures the entire screen and then saves it as a file on your desktop by default.
  • Specific Window or Menu: Press Command+Shift+4, then press Spacebar. This switches to window capture mode, allowing you to click on a window or menu to capture it.

 Using the Screenshot Toolbar (macOS Mojave and later):

  • Press Command+Shift+5 to bring up the screenshot toolbar. This offers more options such as capturing selected portions, windows, or the entire screen directly, along with additional features like timer based captures.

Customizing Where Screenshots on Mac Are Saved:

  • To change this, you can use Terminal:

 Taking Screenshots of Specific Parts:

  • To capture a specific area, use Command+Shift+4 and then drag to select the area.

  • Press Command+Shift+5 and then you can set a timer to capture the screen after some time.

  • Clipboard: You can also capture a screenshot on Mac and copy it to the clipboard without saving to a file by adding Control to the shortcut (e.g., Command + Control + Shift + 3 for full screen).
  • Preview Editing: After capturing a screenshot using Preview, you can edit it before saving or sharing.
