King Saul, The First King of Israel: Part 2

After Saul was anointed by Prophet Samuel but before he became king over Israel, a couple of verses that reveal Saul’s positive aspect of his character which I came across are seen in 1 Samuel 10:16 & 27.
14 The brother of Saul’s father said to him and his servant, “Where have you been?” And Saul said, “To look for the donkeys. When we saw that they could not be found, we went to Samuel.” 15 The brother of Saul’s father said, “Tell me, what did Samuel say to you?” 16 Saul said to his father’s brother, “He told us that the donkeys had been found.” But he did not tell him what Samuel had told him about being king.
As I was reflecting this chapter, verse 16 unveiled something interesting to me. Here we see, after returning from Samuel, Saul met his uncle, Abner who later became commander of Saul’s army. To Abner’s question where Saul was, Saul answered discreetly. He replied he was looking for the lost donkey and he couldn’t find them so ended up meeting Prophet Samuel for the solution. Abner was so curious and smart to hear what Samuel said to Saul. But Saul outsmarted Abner by concealing the prophesy about him.
In verse 16, Saul replied Samuel said that those lost donkeys had been found but didn’t say any personal prophesy pertaining to Saul being king. Saul didn’t lie to his uncle. He answered to the question rightly and he was prudent enough not to blabber about him being the king of Israel which would be an unusual and impossible to a normal person like him. This quality is called discretion which a king must have which king Hezekiah lacked when he was visited by messengers from hostile country, Babylon, led the nation to be plundered later. In Proverbs, King Solomon says,
My son, do not lose sight of these— keep sound wisdom and discretion.
Proverbs 3:21
The other quality of Saul I noticed is visible in same chapter 10:27 where a group within Israel rebelled against Saul’s Kingship over Israel when he was anointed by Prophet Samuel, Saul held his peace.
27 But some men of no worth said, “How can this man save us?” They hated him and did not bring him any gift. But he kept quiet.
Holding one’s peace or keep calm or resisting hostilities is a crucial quality one must possess which Saul had. This is something Yeshua teaches His twelve disciples when He sent them to preach that the Kingdom of heaven is at hand.
13 If the household is worthy, let your peace come upon it. But if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you.
Matthew 10:13
The context was this, Yeshua gave His disciples the power to cast out demons and to heal all kinds of sickness. Before sending them, one of the instructions was if any house that they go into, does not respect them or if the household doesn’t treat them well, let your peace be with you or return with you.
Here, Yeshua forewarns His followers that they will come across two groups: one who receives you and the other despises you. He cleared mud about not to be offended with their behavior towards you or being hostile to them. Instead, simply keep themselves in utmost peace, not let their enemy steals the peace what Yeshua has given in their heart.
Whatever our Lord Yeshua taught His disciples, first He demonstrated to them and then He taught. Following verses did reveal this:
The former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach.
Acts 1:1
In gospel of Luke,
19 And He said to them, “What things?” So they said to Him, “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a Prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people,
Luke 24:19
Coming back to the point, Saul had this quality to be still when people around him came against him at least for that situation. I doubt Saul maintained this quality through his life. Saul remained quiet before their belittling statement, “How can this man save us?” It reminds me our Lord Yeshua. He had a similar situation before His crucifixion when He was taken to Pilate, when the chief priests and elders testified and blasphemed against Yeshua, He answered nothing.
11 Now Jesus stood before the governor. And the governor asked Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?” Jesus said to him, “It is as you say.” 12 And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He answered nothing. 13 Then Pilate said to Him, “Do You not hear how many things they testify against You?” 14But He answered him not one word, so that the governor marveled greatly.
Matthew 27:11-14
The Scripture say here, Pilate, the governor was greatly surprised and wondered at His silence. Why did Yeshua didn’t answer according to Pilate’s interrogations? He was simply obeying His own words, what He had instructed His twelve disciples over a year and a half.
In Proverbs 10:19, king Solomon says,
19 In the multitude of words sin is not lacking,
But he who restrains his lips is wise.
