Black Myth: Wukong and Game Science: From Mobile Games to AAA Masterpiece

Game Science, a rising star in China’s gaming industry, has made a name for itself by transitioning from mobile game development to producing high-quality AAA titles. Founded by former Tencent employees, the company is best known for its latest masterpiece, “Black Myth: Wukong”, a game that has gained global attention for its stunning visuals and innovative gameplay.

The Birth of Game Science

In 2014, a group of core developers from Tencent’s well-known game “Asura” decided to embark on a new journey. Led by CEO Feng Ji, these developers formed Game Science in pursuit of creative freedom and innovation. Their first project, a mobile card strategy game titled “100 Heroes”, was released in 2015. While it initially attracted a significant player base, the game’s long-term retention struggled due to a lack of content updates.

The Rise of “Black Myth: Wukong”

Building on the success of “Red Tides,” Game Science set its sights on creating China’s first AAA title based on the classic “Journey to the West”. After years of development and a groundbreaking gameplay reveal in 2020, “Black Myth: Wukong” became one of the most anticipated games in the world. Released in August 2024, the game was praised for its intricate combat system, stunning visuals powered by Unreal Engine 5, and its deep integration of Chinese mythology.
