HEALTH TIPS – Beans and legumes

Introduction:

Beans are seeds belonging to the plant family Leguminosae. They are subgroups of pulses. These are edible and rich sources of fibre, minerals, proteins, and vitamins; and all these are required by our bodies. It keeps the metabolism of our body balanced.

There are so many different types of beans, from red kidney varieties to lentils; right through to chickpeas.

Edible seeds of legumes are the pulses. Legumes, on the other hand, are nutrient-rich in protein, fibre, and B vitamins; they also contain iron (important for haemoglobin formation), vitamin E (as an antioxidant), and good quantities of calcium & zinc.

General benefits

If we have just one-half cup of beans, we will find about 115 calories, and also 7-9 g fiber, 8 g protein, and only 1 g fat. Legumes are vital in many health-related issues and have been shown to prevent or even stop several diseases.

Carbohydrates are used by our body in the form of legumes. It is a quick source of energy for both; our nervous system and our body.

Blood and heart:

People who use beans or dietary fibre in their diet are saved from the risk of heart attack. Moreover, the chances of other cardiovascular problems also seem to be reduced. These beans balance the composition of blood and stop increasing cholesterol.

Antioxidant:

Beans contain some mineral ions which help in providing antioxidants. These antioxidants work against harmful substances that are produced in catabolism. They also help in maintaining the immunity of our body.

Source of protein:

Beans contain different types of protein which play an important role in repairing our body. The important thing is that soybean alone contains amino acids of 9 different types.

Diabetes control:

Beans have an important role in balancing the composition of our blood. Beans control blood glucose (sugar) which reduces the risk of diabetes. It does not put pressure on the pancreas in our body which has normal and healthy function.

Low risk of cancerous cells:

As you may have heard, beans contain antioxidants. These substances destroy the cancerous cells in our body. It is obvious it protects our body from the risk of getting cancer. Did you know that black beans have the most antioxidants?

Liver health:

Did you know our body gets fat when our liver does not work properly? A fatty layer is deposited on our liver due to which the liver does not function properly and the cholesterol in the blood also increases. Beans have also played an important role in solving this problem.

Better digestive system:

There are also some useful bacteria in our digestive system. These bacteria keep our system functioning properly. If these bacteria become weak or less in number, the digestive system gets damaged and we cannot eat properly. Beans strengthen our intestines, protecting us from digestive system diseases (gut disorders).
