Hyundai Motor Group’s new electric vehicle plant in Georgia will start production later this year. The new plant, Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA), will allow Hyundai to take advantage of incentives provided by the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) to better compete in the U.S. electric vehicle market.
Last week, Hyundai announced that the first model to be produced at the Georgia plant will be the 2025 IONIQ 5, which will be released in the fourth quarter of this year, and this is the first time the company has made an official statement on the operating schedule and specific production plans of the new plant. The new plant will produce all IONIQ 5 versions except the high-performance IONIQ 5N, which is expected to start production in October this year.
Located in Bryan County, Georgia, HMGMA is Hyundai Motor Group’s dedicated electric vehicle plant, which began construction in October 2022. The project was originally scheduled to be completed in the first half of next year, but the timeline was moved up by about three months to match the Biden administration’s IRA incentives. It is reported that the IRA incentives issued by the Biden administration provide large subsidies for American-made electric vehicles.
