As I reflect on my MBA summer internship at TS Conductor, I can’t help but feel grateful for the incredible opportunity to serve as Chief of Staff for a cutting-edge company in the energy sector. TS Conductor, a Series A manufacturer of patented electric transmission conductors, is backed by industry leaders like Breakthrough Energy Ventures, NextEra, and National Grid. This internship allowed me to dive deep into the intersection of business and technology, leveraging my academic background and past experiences in a meaningful way.
Bridging Experience and Education
My journey into this role was anything but traditional. With a background that includes service in the Army and a stint at Starburst, I brought a unique perspective to the table. These experiences helped me navigate the complexities of working in a high-stakes environment like TS Conductor. I was tasked with understanding the intricacies of the manufacturing process, an area that was initially foreign to me. However, my commitment to learning quickly turned this challenge into an opportunity for growth.
Jake Sweed’s MBA curriculum had prepared me with the theoretical knowledge, but it was at TS Conductor that I could apply those concepts in real-time. I had to think critically and make data-driven decisions, honing my skills in strategy and operations management. Each day presented new challenges, pushing me to develop a comprehensive understanding of the business model and how we could innovate within it.
Leading Expansion Strategy
One of the most significant projects I undertook was leading TS Conductor’s expansion strategy. This involved identifying the optimal site for our mega-facility—no small task given the scale of our operations. I conducted thorough market analyses, assessed various locations, and weighed the logistical implications of each potential site. This experience was not only intellectually stimulating but also rewarding, as I felt the weight of my decisions impacting the future of the company.
Moreover, I was responsible for populating a data room that would serve as a critical resource for the Board, our venture capitalists, and the Department of Energy (DOE) Loan Program Office. Crafting this data room required meticulous attention to detail and a clear understanding of what information stakeholders would find most valuable. I learned to communicate complex technical concepts in a straightforward manner, making the information accessible to a diverse audience.
Presenting to Stakeholders
The highlight of my internship was presenting our findings and strategies to the Board, venture capitalists, and the DOE. This was a pivotal moment for me, combining my passion for public speaking with the urgency of securing funding and approval for our expansion plans. The nerves were palpable, but I embraced the challenge, drawing on my military background to maintain composure under pressure.
In the end, my presentation was well-received, and it was gratifying to see our hard work acknowledged. I walked away not just with approval for the next steps in our expansion but also with a renewed sense of confidence in my abilities as a leader and strategist.
Looking Ahead
As I conclude my summer internship at TS Conductor, I carry with me invaluable lessons that extend beyond business acumen. I have learned the importance of resilience, adaptability, and teamwork in driving innovation. Working at the forefront of energy solutions has ignited a passion for sustainability within me, and I am eager to continue my journey in this field.
The experience solidified my belief that the intersection of technology, strategy, and environmental consciousness is where the future lies. I look forward to applying everything I’ve learned as I move forward in my career, embracing every opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the world of energy and beyond.
