
ZYN nicotine pouch is a brand made by Swedish Match, which is a part of Phillip Morris International.
ZYN pouches were first launched in the United States in 2014 by Swedish-American biochemists Linus Mealey and Mattias Sharpe-Sjöberg. Between 2017 and 2019, Swedish Match expanded its manufacturing facility in Owensboro, Kentucky, investing $115 million to produce ZYN pouches domestically. The new plant commenced operations in May 2019, and by the end of 2020, ZYN pouches were available in approximately 100,000 stores across the US. Additionally, they are distributed in markets such as Sweden, Switzerland, and the UK.
The rapid growth in ZYN sales has significantly boosted Swedish Match’s revenues since 2020. Despite other tobacco companies entering the nicotine pouch market around the same time, Swedish Match achieved a 67% market share in the US by early 2023. A study of the four leading brands in the US from September 2019 to March 2022 showed ZYN’s monthly sales rising from about 20 million pouches in late 2019 to over 140 million by early 2022. By early 2023, sales had reached 261 million pouches.
In November 2022, Swedish Match was acquired by Philip Morris International. ZYN was highlighted as a strategic brand in Philip Morris’s vision for a “smoke-free future,” alongside its Iqos and Veev vaping products. Subsequently, Philip Morris’s nicotine pouch brand Shiro was rebranded as ZYN.
