Buying a quality gun safe is smart, but putting it in the wrong location can make it useless. Here are five spots you should absolutely avoid:
- The Master Bedroom Closet. This is the first place burglars check. They know homeowners keep valuables in bedroom closets. While convenient, it’s too predictable. If you must keep a quick-access safe in your bedroom, choose a less obvious location.
- Near Windows or Exterior Doors: Placing your gun safe near windows or outside walls makes it easier for thieves to access. They can use privacy from outdoor cover to work on breaking in. Worse, exterior walls get more temperature swings and moisture, which can damage your firearms over time.
- The Garage Garages seem convenient, but they’re terrible for gun safes. Temperature changes are extreme, humidity is high, and burglars can work quietly without being heard from inside your home. Plus, garage doors are often the weakest entry point in a house.
- Damp Basements Basements might seem secure, but moisture is your gun’s worst enemy. Even with dehumidifiers, many basements stay damp. This leads to rust, corrosion, and damaged firearms. If your basement floods even occasionally, never store guns there.
- Visible from Main Entries. Don’t place your safe where delivery drivers, guests, or service workers can see it through doorways. The fewer people who know you own guns and where you store them, the better.
Where Should You Put It?
The best location is inside your home, away from exterior walls, in a climate-controlled room with limited visibility. A spare interior room, walk-in pantry, or interior closet works well. Bolt it to the floor and wall studs for maximum security.
